News and Announcements

Happy 50th Birthday SAGE!

2015 is a pivotal year for SAGE as we celebrate 50 years of independent, academic and educational global publishing. Since our inception in 1965, our founder, Sara Miller McCune, has had a vision for SAGE – to play a creative role in society and support the dissemination of knowledge, both in publishing developed and emerging fields, ensuring that we effectively support the changing needs of the scholarly community. This was as true then as it is today, and SAGE is incredibly proud of both this championing and initiative spirit.

In our 50th year we have lots of exciting things planned, be this from celebrating with you our authors, editors, library and scholarly partners, to presenting our new products to you at industry and global events. In advance of all of these celebrations, however, we are delighted to share with you our SAGE story.

Ever wanted to know how the name ‘SAGE’ was formed, what our first journal was, or how SAGE became involved with the social sciences? Then take a little look through our potted history so far…..

The Latest SAGE White Paper on Discoverability

What do libraries expect of publishers when it comes to promoting and enabling discoverability of scholarly content? What do librarians believe has the greatest impact of the findability of research resources? What’s at stake if we don’t get discoverability right?

The answers we gleaned from these findings are addressed in the latest SAGE white paper on discoverability, the third in a series: Improving the Discoverability of Scholarly Content: Academic Library Priorities and Perspectives.

Reference Titles Selected for Prestigious Awards

We are very excited to announce that four of our reference titles have been recognized for top awards in the industry! Library Journal has chosen three titles to be included in its Best Reference of 2015 list and ALA’s RUSA, Reference and User Services Association, chose two titles for its Outstanding Reference Sources list. One title, Encyclopedia of Humor Studies, was included in both lists.

The annual Library Journal Best Reference list recognizes the top reference titles that have been reviewed in the publication during the previous year. The SAGE titles included this year are:

  • Encyclopedia of Education Economics & Finance – Dominic J. Brewer, Lawrence O Picus
  • Encyclopedia of Humor Studies – Salvatore Attardo
  • Encyclopedia of Social Media and Politics – Kerric Harvey

Each year, RUSA’s Outstanding Reference Sources Committee lists what they call “the most noteworthy reference titles published in the previous year” in their Outstanding References Sources list. The two SAGE titles chosen to be included in the 2015 list are:

  • The Encyclopedia of Deception – Timothy R. Levine
  • The Encyclopedia of Humor Studies – Salvatore Attardo

Adam Matthew Named in Top 10 Internet Resources

The Choice subject editors recognize the most significant titles reviewed each calendar year by compiling the “Outstanding Academic Titles” (OAT) list, which is published each January in Choice magazine and on Choice Reviews Online.

Signal, a Newsletter for SAGE Authors and Editors

In November 2014 SAGE debuted Signal, a semi-annual newsletter for SAGE authors and editors that keeps our extended family informed about the company and the activities of our community. This includes products such as new journals and innovations such as the SAGE Swifts series of short books, plus news about the recognition our authors and editors receive, and updates on our advocacy and philanthropy.

The first issue, for example, included a detailed look at SAGE’s efforts to protect and enhance the authors’ voice, including work with Banned Books Week, our partnership with The Conversation, and lobbying to protect social science research funding. Each issue of Signal will host some ‘news you can use,’ such as tips for better communication and fun facts about SAGE itself. Please take a look at our first issue - We’d love to hear what you think about Signal. Send us an email at signal@sagepub.com.

SAGE Weathers the Storm at ALA Midwinter in Chicago

Despite 12+ inches of snow, SAGE had a warm and delightful time convening at the ALA Midwinter Conference in Chicago in January. Not only did we demo new products including our new video collection, a new suite of business products, and SAGE Research Methods Datasets, but we also celebrated SAGE’s 50th anniversary the right way – with cake and champagne! Additionally, we discussed our new white paper on the discoverability of scholarly content, and played “Wheel of Fortune” with booth visitors.

With a raging storm that came through on Sunday, unfortunately, we had to cancel our “Topnotch Tools, Tricks, and Tips for a Successful 2015” presentation with infoDOCKET’s Gary Price. However, we are delighted to give the presentation via webinar instead (details to come). If you are interested in attending, please send an email to camille.gamboa@sagepub.com.

SAGE Celebrates 50th Anniversary at the 2015 Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference

SAGE was proud to be the online sponsor of the Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference (ER&L) 2015 in Austin, Texas February 22-25, 2015. With hundreds of live and online participants, SAGE’s sponsorship featured the streaming and standing-room only session, “The Faculty and Student Experience of Streaming Video” by Elisabeth Leonard, SAGE’s Executive Market Research Manager. In addition, over 100 ER&L participants celebrated with us at the SAGE 50th Anniversary Reception held at the conference as well as many other on-site activities including developmental focus groups and product training opportunities for current customers.

NEICON 2014 Conference, Israel

Blazing sunshine and long beaches provided the backdrop for the 2nd NEICON conference in Netanya, a gathering of 170 Russian librarians and our consortia partners NEICON. Our trial to SAGE Research Methods and our survey incentivised by £150 of SAGE book vouchers was greeted with interest as was the “How to get published” session we presented during the plenary. As the only publisher with printed Russian material our stand was busy and some good conversations were had about SAGE content provision into the Russian library market.

The Importance of being Earnest at the Charleston Conference 2014

SAGE was delighted to join the important conversations that took place at the Charleston Conference last November. Themed “the importance of being earnest,” we discussed how we can come together to create innovative solutions to the pressing issues of today and tomorrow. Among the presentations we were involved in, members of the SAGE team discussed the state of print reference, open access and the role of academic libraries, discovery issues and solutions, and managing subscriptions after SWETS. Click here to learn more.

Additionally, Charleston attendees were given a copy of the Charleston Conference desk calendar 2015, which featured the 12 winners of our “What’s your favorite library tradition?” photo contest.

SAGE was the Platinum Sponsor for the ALIA conference

We highlighted Sara’s story and the difference between SAGE and other publishers in being an independent publisher now and into the future.  This was supported by public speeches at the conference’s opening and the Conference Dinner as well as product presentations – all of which contributed to focus on SAGE as a social science publisher, with innovative teaching, learning and researching products as well as being a library partner to institutions in Australia and New Zealand.

The new Box D products were also talking points at the exhibition booth while the introductory video for SAGE Video playing at the background. Oliver Stacy from AMD joined us at the booth to promote 2015 New Collections.

SAGE was part of the conference passport competition where the event organizer scattered a series of QR codes throughout the exhibition hall. Delegates are to find the QR codes and that drew many to our booth where we could grab the opportunity to speak to them. Generally a successful event for us and we are able to generate hot leads to the new products where the sales representatives will follow up accordingly.

Guest Post from the ALPSP Travel Grant Winner

SAGE once again supported the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) International conference, by offering a travel grant to a librarian to attend the 2014 conference. This year’s recipient was Megan Redmond, Academic Liaison Librarian, London Metropolitan University.

We caught up with Megan after the conference to find out her take on the experience, seminar debates and what she has taken away.
