Beyond search: Enabling serendipity in research discovery

Researchers often find and retrieve the content they need through carefully planned searches - but what about less structured, unexpected instances of scholarly discovery? SAGE Publishing has released a new two-part white paper that explores the common researcher experiences that lead to “chance” discoveries as well as opportunities for information professionals to support and encourage serendipity in academic research.

The first paper discusses findings from a global survey of 239 students and faculty combined with user experience research and interviews with publishing experts and technology suppliers, alongside an in-depth review of relevant literature. The second paper details how this research led to the development of SAGE Recommends, a new discovery tool launched in December 2015.

Read the full white paper here and if you have any questions about its content, please email PR@sagepub.co.uk.

Recent webinars sponsored by SAGE Publishing

Supporting (Big) Data Research - Presented by: SAGE, ER&L, and Library Journal
As scholars use new digital tools and resources to expand their scope of research and teaching, libraries are evolving to support them. This recorded webinar offers the chance for librarians to learn about the tools, resources, and services used to support curricular and research needs and engage in discussions with colleagues who are helping their libraries reimagine services and evolve to support for their communities. Watch the full recorded webinar here.

Data Visualization - Presented by: SAGE, ER&L, and Library Journal
Data visualization labs have become a hot trend in academic libraries, helping scholars interpret, describe, and communicate complex data sets such as census data, image collections, maps, or molecular models. Over the past few years large, high resolution displays have been appearing in academic libraries. Now that these displays have been present in libraries for some time the question is how are they being used and who is using them? In this webinar, librarians from several academic institutions shared their experiences. Watch the full recorded webinar here.

Case Studies for Open Science - Presented by: SAGE, ER&L, and Library Journal
The Open Science initiative aims to make research and data accessible to and reusable by the broadest possible audience, encompassing such practices as open publication, open peer review, and open access; and, encourages the “open notebook” approach, in which the process of scientific research is openly shared, often in advance of a project’s completion. In this webinar current activities and trends outside of libraries are described, highlighted and connected to the roles librarians/libraries can play in helping to make these processes more readily available and adopted. Watch the full recorded webinar here.

ALA Midwinter 2016

The SAGE Publishing Library team had a wonderful time at the ALA in Boston, in January 2016. In addition to our full array of library resources, we were excited to highlight the newest additions to our portfolio, SAGE Video and Business and Management products, including SAGE Business Researcher, SAGE Business Stats and the upcoming SAGE Business Cases.  We enjoyed meaningful interactions with more than 300 customers in the booth and were happy to see good participation in our in-booth and presentations demos, including “Student Use of Video on Campus,” “Supporting Entrepreneurship Across Campus,” and “How Are Research Methods Taught Within The Curriculum?”

Other highlights from the conference included an in-booth Graph Wall and the RUSA Awards. For the Graph Wall, we asked librarians about the most common learning style they see among their patrons. Participants answered the question by writing the name of their library on a post-it note and placing it over one of five given answers: Reading, Audio, Visual, By Repetition, and Learn by Doing. At the end of the conference, the majority selected Learn by Doing, with Visual coming in second. Also, we were pleased to learn that the SAGE Encyclopedia of Alcohol won an Outstanding Reference Source Award from RUSA.

IFLA WLIC 2015

In August 2015, SAGE Publishing attended the IFLA WLIC in Cape Town, South Africa and hosted a reception to mark both the 40th anniversary of IFLA Journal as well as the 50th anniversary of SAGE. We once again participated in the ‘How to Get Published’ session and delegates had the opportunity to submit questions in advance to our Publisher and the Editor of the journal.

Each year as part of the conference, SAGE co-sponsors the Academic and Research Libraries Section (ARL) attendance grant, which allows a librarian or information professional to attend the congress for free. The winners of the ARL attendance grant for the 2015 IFLA World Library and Information Congress were: Phillidas Munubhi Bweafoma (Tanzania), Shaharima Parvin (Bangladesh) and Georgia Alexander (Trinidad and Tobago). Find out more here.

SAGE works closely with travel grant winners to ensure they get the most out of their experience and this includes a blog post interview with each winner and post conference follow-up to gain in-depth insight into their experiences. Read the full interviews here.
