2. Work and Alienation

Support for Blauner is provided by Hull et al. (1982) 'The effect of technology on alienation from work: testing Blauner's inverted U-curve hypothesis for 110 industrial organizations and 245 retrained printers', Work and Occupations, 9 (1): 31–57. Vallas (1988) 'New technology, job content, and worker alienation: a test of two rival perspectives', Work and Occupations, 15 (2): 148–78 is relevant to the Blauner thesis and is a good introduction to the issue of skill discussed in the next two chapters.
