A Welcome from the Author

Assuming you have come to this page intentionally, thank you for your interest in Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers. It is because of the continued enthusiasm for this book of generations of primary trainee teachers, teachers and teacher trainers, since its much slimmer first edition back in 1995, that my publisher and I have been encouraged and able to produce this revised and expanded fourth edition.

I am also delighted that, with the help of Ralph Manning at UEA Norwich, I have been able to produce a Student Workbook to accompany the fourth edition of Mathematics Explained. This will help readers to check their understanding of the text, to use and apply the mathematical content, and to consider aspects of learning and teaching.

Teaching primary school teaching is a great job, you know, and teaching mathematics can be one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of that job – but only if you have confidence in the subject yourself. That’s what this book aims to give you. The feedback we have had from some of the 100,000 purchasers of previous editions encourages me to expect that it might do just that.

If you decide to read the book, I hope you enjoy it and benefit from it. You may have to work hard and concentrate, but, generally, you should come to the conclusion that all that this book does is to explain simple things simply.
